Following Gate's defeat, he reveals he has rebuilt Sigma, the leader of the Mavericks, but Sigma is not fully rebuilt. However, Sigma nearly kills Gate and challenges his old enemies.
Sigma is once again defeated and the endings depend on which character defeats Sigma. If X defeats Sigma, he rescues Gate so that Alia, his previous comrade, could rebuild him. A similar ending is shown if X did not find Zero who decides not to return to fight. Should Zero defeat Sigma, he requests to be sealed in to order to remove a component from his body.
The gameplay is very similar to Mega Man X5. The player can select X with the option to outfit him with different armors offering unique abilities most of which have to be downloaded, as always, through Dr. Light's hidden capsules.
Zero can be unlocked after finding and defeating the Zero Nightmare, bringing his own weapons and techniques to the fold, including a refined Z-Saber fighting style.
Both characters can be equipped with various power-up items earned after rescuing certain Reploids. Mega Man X6 has an increased emphasis on rescuing Reploids over previous titles in the series. Whereas previous games rewarded the player with health or an extra life, Mega Man X6 rewards the player with additional parts or other permanent prizes. Rescuing Reploids was made more difficult in this game with the addition of the Nightmare, which makes any Reploid it infects evil, thus rendering the Reploid impossible to save.
Just like the previous games in the series, X6 goes with the familiar 2D style that made this platform-shooter popular. You can choose from Mega Man X and other characters depending on the game progress. If you choose regular MM, you will have to rely on power-ups to unlock armor and other different abilities.
While you go through the levels, you need to collect various items and power-ups. The new nightmare system makes this much harder at some points. Whenever you complete a level, one of the levels will change in some way. Sometimes this would be just a rearrangement of the boxes, while other times the levels will turn pitch-black with only glimpses of light to guide you through.
This is an interesting feature that adds to the replay value and diversity of the game. Our heroes, X and Zero need to stop Sigma who has once again been brought back.
X and Zero are really up against it this time. I liked the story; it is a good continuation of the last game and you have three different endings to experience. Not a great deal has changed with the visuals in Mega Man X5.
To be fair, this was already a great looking game and Capcom kept things very similar for this title. I like the way the different Mavericks looked and the level design is pretty cool with many what looks like prerendered elements to them that really do help them pop. The soundtrack is badass and one area where the game improves upon what Mega Man X4 offered in my opinion. I am a huge Guns n Roses fan and I can see the influences from them all over this game!
I also liked how there were classic Mega Man tracks in here too. The biggest gameplay change here is that Zero and X can now duck. The animation may be a tad weird, but it is a feature that is long overdue in this series.
