Mellon intelligent software agents
To provide support for more complex tasks that involve information gathering along with decision making capabilities, an agent must communicate and cooperate with other agents. One of the main issues is how to structure a multi-agent architecture that will allow access, filtering and fusing of information from many sources and services, integrated with flexible decision support. In this paper we present such an architecture. It has two layers: The top layer consists of task-specific software agents which help users perform tasks by formulating problem solving plans and carrying out these plans through querying and exchanging information with other software agents.
The defense industrial complex has different priorities when it comes to x-raying what's happening inside the heads of humans. While your mind might race to use cases like interrogation, the stated purpose of the CMU-led DARPA research is to use machine social intelligence to help human-and-machine teams work together safely, efficiently and productively.
The idea is to develop software agents with emotional intelligence, autonomous programs that can perceive their environment and make decisions. Are they paying attention to what is needed? Are they overloaded? To test their socially intelligent agents, the team will send them into a search-and-rescue scenario within Minecraft.
The testbed wad developed by researchers at Arizona State. As the project progresses, the agents will try to infer the mind states first of individual players and then of teams of players. AI systems aren't yet capable of this skill, but Sycara and her colleagues expect to achieve this through meta-learning, a branch of machine learning in which the software agent essentially learns how to learn.
The research team will test their socially intelligent agents in a search-and-rescue scenario within the virtual world of the Minecraft video game, in a testbed developed with researchers at Arizona State University.
In the first year, the researchers will focus on training their software agent to infer the state of mind of an individual team member. Use this form if you have come across a typo, inaccuracy or would like to send an edit request for the content on this page.
